Top reasons: Why you must use social media for your salon

Gone are the days of popping an advert in the Yellow pages.

Once upon a time,  that would have been enough.  Making sure that your salon was somewhere between A-N otherwise it may not  have been chosen by the time the Yellow Pages reader flicked through the N-Z titled Salons.

Often,  people still advertise this way and it's not totally a waste.  Not everybody is on the internet now - are they?
Those who aren't may not be your ideal client.  So who is?  And what do they need?  Why should you get onto social media?

Social media for your salon business

If you are salon based or freelance there are many similarities in your business needs.

* You work with the public.  Therefore you need to generate a 'community' atmosphere within your business.

* You are in a very visual industry and therefore can constantly showcase your work using social media.

* Marketing is FREE using these platforms.

Where to start?  Twitter?

Twitter is an excellent 'quick fire' tool for you and your salon.  Getting the word out this way is fast and easy.

The great thing about twitter is: it is constant.  In other words,  you don't need a person to keep in touch with you for them to see your updates.  If you did,  the chances are your tweets would become invisible.
You are always visible on twitter for your clients to see.

The down side of twitter is it can very much be great for businesses on the WWW.  So you may find that without searching for local clients,  you are wasting your time.  There are ways to find them,  using hashtags and your town name.  Even better using your town name and hairdresser or salon.  If you are a salon which would consider retailing online,  this would be excellent for you.

Facebook?

With Facebook,  you can easily 'boost' posts for a small fee.  This is how you ensure your Facebook people get to see your posts.

Creating a page for your salon business is a great idea.  If you make it a 'place' your clients can 'check in' and even give you a rating while they have their hair done - doing your advertising for you!

Facebook tends to be a little easier to generate a community for local people.  This is most salon owners preferred way forward.  Of course,  using photos is excellent on Facebook too.  You could extend this to be 'shared' on your family and friends list by using your own personal profile.

Getting all of your salon staff to 'suggest a like' onto the page is a great idea.  They can then add all of their friends and this will ensure that they can quickly post:
"Stacey has a cancellation today at 4pm for a cut and finish - inbox us to book it!"

Instagram!

By far my favourite for salons and speed.  All you need to do is point your iPhone at your client and shoot the photo - even better the video.  Then upload.  Some hashtags will help you gain popularity! Such as #scene #haircut.  Myself and the Hairdressers Journal had a conversation about the lack of hairdressing salons using this service! It's free,  easy and brilliant!
Find me here - keeping it personal too!

Without using these tools for your salon,  business will dry up.  If people are not talking about you, your stylists,  your amazing menu of drinks,  your products - you will become history and leave space for all the other salons who are one step ahead of you.
